We hear it all the time from clients: “I always gain winter weight. If only I could..”
Many people struggle with the winter blues; feeling unhappy with themselves (and their bodies) because they’re not able to play outside, and get vitamin D from natural sunlight. Usually they find themselves eating that third sleeve of Oreos just because they’re “stuck” and bored inside.
“It’s too cold” is can’t be an excuse anymore to stay indoors all winter. Nowadays we have plenty of technology to keep us from freezing in the middle of January (and February, and March, and sometimes April ugh!).
So, what can you do to stay active during these colder months?
1. SLEDDING/SKIING & SNOWBOARDING
A family pastime that can keep you occupied for the entire day. Find a hill and bring a sled! Also, a lot of mountains have lessons for all ages and skill levels. Of course, the best part of skiing and snowboarding is hanging in the lodge once you’re too tired to go on.
2. SHOVEL
“You want me to what!?” Yes, go shovel. Make sure to warm up first! Then, go crazy. Be sure to lift with your hips and not your back. You’ll be sweating in no time.
3. WALK & HIKE
As long as there’s not 3-feet of snow on the ground, going for a quick walk around the neighborhood is a simple way to ensure you’re actually going outside in the winter. If you can find some people to hike with, go for it! Watch out for polar bears. :)
